Man in Crisis Climbs Crane in Downtown Hamilton

On Tuesday July 30 2019, around 01:00, Hamilton Police received a 911 phone call about a male climbing a construction crane located at the intersection of Main Street East and Walnut Street South. Upon their arrival to the scene police secured the area by closing off the roads around the intersection. Negotiations with the man started a short time after. Along with police, fire and EMS were on scene to assist in any way that they could.

About 3 and a half hours later; between the time of 3:30 and 4:00, police were able to negotiate with the male and convinced him to come down off the crane. The male who has not been identified as anything other than a “24-year-old male of no fixed address” was than taken into police custody and transported to a hospital for further assessment.

We are happy to report that during this incident, there were no injuries obtained and all the roadways were re-opened a short time later. Well done to all emergency services who were on scene during the incident. Everyone played a vital role in making sure that the man got down safely.
